Weave a hand dyed cane basket with Polly Pollock
Polly's work combines basketry and stitched textile techniques, exploring themes of homemaking and nurture, damage, protection and repair. Working mostly with paper yarns which she dyes using gentle eco-dyes, often produced from her vegetable peelings, tea leaves, etc, to give soft and gentle colour palettes, Polly tries to ensure her work, albeit in small ways, avoids contributing to the mounting levels of waste in the world today.
In this two day workshop Polly will introduce you to the basketry technique used for working with cane, known as “stake and strand” (which is also used a lot for willow basketry). This technique allows for a variety of different colour patterns to be worked so the first morning will be spent colouring the cane, which takes dye very easily.
Once the cane has been dyed and is dry, you will learn how to start the base of a cane basket and then work up the sides, shaping as you go. Polly will bring lots of samples to give ideas of what patterns and colour combinations you can choose to weave up the sides of your baskets and there will also be the option to add colourful leather cord to turn your basket into a hanging basket.
Finally, you’ll work a simple border to finish off your basket.
