Create your own cloth - using resists

Exploring the possibilities of resists and thickened dye paste to create space in your cloth

Picture
Mark making on cloth with thickened dye is one of our favourite ways to create original fabric and combining it with a variety of  resists opens up endless creative possibilities.   This workshop will help you extend your surface design skills as you explore wet and dry resists to make an exciting collection of cloth; exploring what you 'leave out' and creating space  for other things to happen.
We'll introduce you to using everyday objects (we are fans of the humble potato masher!) with a flour resist and printing techniques to create the beautiful and inspired fabric.  These will need to be left to dry over night before colour magic can happen!
The next day we will introduce you to mark making with melted soya wax, to create yet more exciting and original designs on your fabric. We do have traditional tjantings you can use,  but we prefer a more organic approach and will use 'found objects' and scruffy paint brushes to print, flick and splatter the melted wax!
Soya was is a great alternative to Batik wax as it's environmentally friendly and can be washed out of the cloth on a hot wash.
Resists can be used in combination with other surface design techniques such as silk  and thermofax screens, stencils and masks.  And you don't have to always start with white fabric: it's a great technique for adding the next layers to your hand dyed and printed fabrics.

Our studio has plenty of parking and direct access;  it's a purpose built, light and airy space which is fully equipped for surface design as well as other textile techniques.  The  workshop fee includes access to all the dye, paint and most of the equipment you will need but you will need to bring your own fabrics,  however we do stock prepared for dyeing fabric which you can buy direct as required.  Each workshop  has a maximum of ten students, each working on individual, height adjustable benches.

We will provide tea and coffee but you will need to bring your own packed lunch. There is a fridge, oven and microwave should you wish to warm up your lunch.
