Create your own cloth - in a bucket
Over the four sessions you'll use fibre reactive dyes to colour natural fibres (cotton or linen) to create a stash of coordinating fabrics which can be then used as they are or taken forward into additional surface design workshops, adding further layers of interest and complexity.
In the first of the first two sessions you'll learn how to mix simple and complex colours using Procion MX dyes and develop colour families from your own sources of inspiration.
In the first of the first two sessions you'll learn how to mix simple and complex colours using Procion MX dyes and develop colour families from your own sources of inspiration.
You will use a high water immersion technique to first create a family of fabrics with a solid colour and minimal surface texture, then using just one colour you will dye a graduated palette and finally use two colours for an exchange technique.
In weeks three and four you will learn how a low water immersion technique, with little or no agitation
or one where you manipulate the fabric first and then apply colour in focused areas, results in fabrics with more visual texture. Tray dyeing is one of the simplest ways to get a specific texture and can be quite addictive!
The InStitches studio has plenty of parking and direct access. It is a purpose build, light and airy space which is fully equipped for surface design as well as other textile techniques and the course or workshop fee includes access to all the dye, paint and most of the equipment you will need. You will need to bring your own fabrics however we do stock prepared for dyeing fabric which you can buy direct as required. Each workshop or course has a maximum of ten students, each working on individual, height adjustable benches.
We will provide tea and coffee but you will need to bring your own packed lunch. There is a fridge, oven and microwave should you wish to warm up your lunch.
