Create your own cloth - with surface design
The first day will focus on experimenting with colour as you learn how to mix both simple and complex colours using thickened Procion MX dyes, creating a colour 'tartan', before starting to explore different colour schemes.
These initial colour schemes will become an excellent colour reference tool for future surface design work.
Using a wide range of tools with the thickened dyes, you'll begin exploring scraping, stamping with 'found objects', rollering or printing, doodling and writing with a needle nosed bottle.
Thickened dye can then be scraped across the surface of the fabric to colour the backgrounds or used on its own as gestural marks made with a brush or squeegee to create visual texture. We'll be encouraging you to play, to experiment and have fun when you first start out; work with a curious mind, see what is possible!
As the week progresses you'll also explore other techniques including monoprinting, resisting and removing colour and how to develop and use traditional silk screens and light-weight thermal screens. All these techniques are exciting ways to add marks to cloth and you'll be encouraged to combine different approaches and add intentional layering to create different marks or textures.
Our studio has plenty of parking and direct access; it's a purpose built, light and airy space which is fully equipped for surface design as well as other textile techniques. The workshop fee includes access to all the dye, paint and most of the equipment you will need but you will need to bring your own fabrics, however we do stock prepared for dyeing fabric which you can buy direct as required. Each workshop has a maximum of ten students, each working on individual, height adjustable benches.
We will provide tea and coffee but you will need to bring your own packed lunch. There is a fridge, oven and microwave should you wish to warm up your lunch.
