Kate Findlay - Procreate for textile design

Learn how to use your iPad to turn a photo into a design on a finished garment, homewares or fabric

Picture
Berkshire artist Kate Findlay can't think of anything she likes doing more than starting with an idea, and developing it through the use of colour and composition until it becomes a new work of art.  As well as working with traditional techniques such as sketching, watercolours and applique, Kate also uses digital drawings and painting in her work.

In this three-day workshop Kate will teach you the basics of the Procreate app on your iPad.  You will learn how to manipulate photos using a vector app, alter the colours and design further in Procreate, then use these images in a range of Print on Demand (POD) sites to create clothing, kitchenware, curtains and many other items.
You will learn how to:
  • use Procreate
  • import and export images into Procreate
  • create palettes and alter colours
  • resize files
  • assign a colour profile to your work
  • change the DPI and why this matters
You will also learn:
  • how to use a vector app to manipulate your photos
  • to import your images into Procreate
  • learn the difference between vector and raster images, and why this matters in your work
  • about file types: JPG, SVG, PNG, TIFF
  • about Print on Demand companies and other companies printing fabric by the metre
  • how to create work that meets the requirements for printing
  • Finally, you will experiment with uploading images to a POD site and creating some garments tailored to your size, or if you prefer, household items.
Please note:  you will NOT be designing in repeat during this course
Essential workshop requirements:
  • iPad with good memory capacity: Click on Settings, then About. This tells you exactly which iPad you have and its capacity – also what storage is left. If you are thinking of upgrading and wish to use it as a design tool go for the biggest memory you can afford!
  • Apple iPencil: Kate strongly recommends an Apple iPencil over other styluses. You MUST check that the pencil is compatible with your iPad before you come – try it out! Other styli may not have the same functionality as the Apple iPencil. If you really don’t want to invest at this stage, it is possible to manage without, but it can be frustrating when drawing as you don’t get the fine control.

Please note that this workshop is only suitable for iPad users
Scrumptious biscuits with your morning coffee, a light seasonal lunch and a 'naughty, but nice' cake with a pot of afternoon tea are included in the workshop fee.
