Every picture tells a story - Sue Stone

'Double Take' photo Sue Stone

Look at different ways to tell a story using your own images, symbols and anecdotes to convey ideas, thoughts and memories.

Sue Stone is a UK based textile artist who studied fashion at St Martins School of Art and the embroidery at Goldsmiths College in London. She is former chair and an exhibiting member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists and a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Built in layers, Sue’s mixed media compositions contrast the slow building of an image in hand stitch with the spontaneity of free machine stitch and paint.  Disparate images of the real are combined with the imagined, the remembered, and sometimes the nonsensical to create a partial narrative with a slightly surreal sense of humour which the viewer is invited to complete.

In this workshop you will look at different ways to tell a story using your own images, symbols and anecdotes to convey ideas, thoughts and memories. The aim is to encourage exploration and experimentation with different ways of combining of hand and machine stitch, figurative images and text.
After a  short digital presentation you will be taken through how to use your own drawings or photographs as a starting point and how to start a piece of work using some of the simple processes Sue uses herself including transferring an image to fabric, free machine stitch sketches, different types of appliqué, and drawing with hand and/or machine stitch to make text.

Throughout this two-day workshop you will be encouraged to use sampling as an aid to deciding which techniques to use. Working in both hand and machine stitch this workshop is suitable for all abilities.
