Sam Jones - Using nature's colours

Explore eco printing on paper and fabric with textile artist Sam Jones

Picture
Sam is a mixed media artist living and working in Hampshire.   She had the opportunity to  study under the guidance of Jenny Dean and is currently exploring eco printing, natural dyes, indigo and earth pigments in order to make her own work more sustainable.  In 2023  Sam set up a local dye garden, where she is growing and then processing a range of natural dyes including indigo.
This workshop is designed as an introduction to eco printing  where you use plant material combined with mordants to create images on both paper and fabric.

Sam will introduce you too two different approaches to creating leaf bundles and using the natural dye logwood in conjunction with mordants.  You will produce a variety of samples which could be used in larger works or kept as reference samples for future experimentation:
  • Mordants and mordanting fabric.
  • Making leaf bundles -two approaches will be explored.
  • Eco printing on paper.
  • Eco printing on fabric.
  • Eco printing larger pieces such as a silk scarf.
  • Use of natural dyes such as logwood in conjunction with mordants.
  • Oxidising prints to ensure clarity.
  • Aftercare of papers and fabrics.
