Coiled baskets with Polly Pollock
Polly's work combines basketry and stitched textile techniques, exploring themes of homemaking and nurture, damage, protection and repair. Working mostly with paper yarns which she dyes using gentle eco-dyes, often produced from her vegetable peelings, tea leaves, etc, to give soft and gentle colour palettes, Polly tries to ensure her work, albeit in small ways, avoids contributing to the mounting levels of waste in the world today.
Coiling is different from other basketry techniques in that it is a stitched technique (as opposed to woven), and has many references to constructed textiles. Coiled basketry is made by a ‘core’ element being wrapped and stitched with another material, which joins the coils (rows) together as they spiral outwards and upwards from a central point, to make an enclosed basket, a wider open basket, a mat, or more experimental form.
