Nesta Davies - Crossed structure book binding
For many years Nesta has taught at the City Lit, London, teaching book conservation, book arts, decorated papers and City & Guilds Bookbinding. She particularly likes teaching short workshops and taster days and getting to meet potential bookbinders of the future! Nesta runs her own bookbinding and teaching studio, Leafwork, now based in Dorset and her work is in national and international public and private collections. She was commissioning editor of The New Bookbinder from 2000 – 2012.
Terry met Nesta at a recent Dorset Art Weeks and, as we are both keen book makers, knew instantly that we needed her to visit InStitches and teach a workshop for us! The book Nesta has chosen for us has a crossed structure binding, which is a modern binding, developed by Carmencho Arregui , an Italian book binder, in the mid ‘90s.
The morning will be spent learning about the binding and making a version with card covers. Then, in the afternoon, you'll make another version (or the same, depending on what you chose to do) in leather. It also works well with textiles if you don't fancy leather. It's a very flexible book thereby making it an excellent sketchbook!
The technique is ideal for anyone who is used to sewing, measuring and cutting accurately and would suit beginners or those with some experience of bookbinding/ other paper crafts.
There will be home made biscuits with morning coffee, a light seasonal lunch and an enticing cake with a pot of afternoon tea. So why not treat yourself and spend a day being creative in the company of friends ?
