Janina Maher - Handmade 'vegetarian leather' album

Due to Coronavirus this workshop is CANCELLED. We will try to reschedule later this year or next year.
We are very sorry that we have had to do this, but it seems the only option at the moment.

Turn brown paper into a beautiful textured paper that looks just like leather. Then use the ‘vegetarian leather’ as the cover for your own handmade album.

Picture
Reading based artist, Janina Maher, has always loved drawing and painting and is a self-confessed addict of beautiful papers of all types!  She designs and makes handmade books in her garden studio and has been teaching creative bookmaking and mixed media for many years.  Janina's gentle encouragement and carefully structured workshops  inspire confidence.

Janina is a member of the Reading Guild of Artists.
We both love to make books and when Janina showed us this album we were intrigued by the covering - and we are sure you will be too.
The first part of the workshop will be spent making the 'leather' using a few sheets of ordinary brown paper and adding texture and colour before waxing and burnishing.  Once dry you'll then use these 'vegetarian leather' sheets to cover the front and back boards of the album.

You will then construct the album using  metal hinges for the two-part cover and a Japanese stab stitch  binding and you will also be able to add your choice of beads or dangles for a finishing effect.
The inside pages will be 140gsm cartridge paper , so you can use your handmade book as a journal, album or paint and draw in it; what will you use yours for?
Whether you are a beginner or have plenty of experience this workshop is suitable for anyone interested in working creatively with paper and thread

Dates: Tuesday 24th March 2020

The studio will be open from 9.15am and the workshop will start at 9.30am until 4.30pm (ish)

Cost: £85 (this includes most materials and lunch).

Please note: places are limited and available on a first come, first served basis; to secure your place please ensure you pay at the time of booking.
There will be home-made biscuits with morning coffee, a light seasonal lunch and an enticing cake with a pot of afternoon tea.  So why not treat yourself and spend a day being creative in the company of friends?
