Free Motion Quilting courses |
|
A quilt isn't finished until it's quilted; and we love all kinds of quilting at InStitches. One of our very favourite ways of quilting is by dropping the feed-dogs and doing our own thing, using the needle and thread to doodle over the fabric surface.
We've been quilting this way for years but even so, we can still remember how daunting it can be when you first set out to free motion quilt (FMQ). So, to help you on your FMQ way we have put together two short courses - scroll down to read the details and decide which is best for you.
Free Motion Quilting: the basics
This is where you start, right at the beginning. We'll go through all the steps on setting up for free motion quilting - from needle and thread choices to waddings and gloves. And then you will start sewing, step by step, pattern by pattern; growing in confidence and skill throughout the course. At the end of the course we find students are always amazed when they look back at their first samples to see just how far they have come. For us, as tutors, it is one of the most rewarding courses to teach.
Each session we will provide you with an inspirational range of patterns, which gradually build in complexity. We have plenty of variations, so there's something for everyone; and of course it's always thrilling when a student develops a new pattern of their own.
The resulting ‘quilted sandwiches’ can be kept as a stitch reference library or we'll show you how to sew them all together to make a small quilt.
It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or have been sewing for a while, this course is suitable all levels

Free Motion Quilting: beyond the basics
You've learned how to free motion quilt, but now not sure how to use it in your quilt making? Or perhaps you've spent all that time planning and making the quilt top but are then stumped on how to quilt it and frightened you'll 'spoil' it. We know that feeling!
In the Beyond the basics, by creating small sampler pieces, you will be guided through a series of decision making processes to use when planning the quilting . There will be the opportunity to try out different styles, learn a few more patterns and create originals to suit any quilt.
Hazel likes adding paint to a quilted surface to emphasise the quilting pattern. In the final session you to will be able to have a go - you may find yourself surprised by the results!
To get the most out of this course you do need to be a competent free-motion-quilter as we will assume that you know the basics! It makes an excellent follow-on course from our FMQ - the basics course.
