Explore how to obtain colour from nature with Ditchling Dyer, Sam Jones

Sam is a mixed media artist living and working in Hampshire and an active member of Ditchling Dyers.

Having had the opportunity to study under the guidance of Jenny Dean, Sam is currently exploring eco printing, natural dyes, indigo and earth pigments in order to make her own work more sustainable.

In 2023 Sam set up a local dye garden, where she is growing and then processing a range of natural dyes including indigo.

This 8 month natural dye course will give you an excellent grounding in how to achieve natural colours on both fabric and thread: you'll explore a variety of natural dyestuffs, learning how to extract colour from them and fix it to a variety of fibres. and the once colour has been achieved you'll extend your colour range using modifiers. There will also be the opportunity to learn a fresh leaf indigo processes and the creation of indigo vats to achieve a range of blues.

Sam has also included an eco printing day to show you how to record a variety of leaves on fabrics and paper and to finish off this course she'll cover how to grow your own dye plants and how to make drawing inks from natural materials.

Date: One-day-a month (Monday) starting 29th September 2025 (8 days)

Time: The studio will be open from 9.00am and the workshop will start at 9.30am until approx. 4pm

Cost: £860 - this includes a £60 materials fee

£300 deposit will secure your place
£300, 2nd payment due 17 weeks beforehand
£260 balance due 6 weeks before the course starts
