Create your own cloth - Exploring Indigo
Working as a mixed media artist living and working in Hampshire, Sam had the opportunity to study under the guidance of Jenny Dean and is currently exploring eco printing, natural dyes, indigo and earth pigments in order to make her own work more sustainable. In 2023 Sam set up a local dye garden, where she is growing and then processing a range of natural dyes including indigo, and in April 2024 she travelled to Japan on a research trip to study indigo growing and processing along with stitch resist techniques. Whilst there, as well as visiting a range of indigo studios, Sam was able to worked with Japanese indigo artists Makiko Tokunaga and Taka Ishii.
Indigo is a magical process; during this three-day workshop you will learn how to create two types of indigo vat using both natural and synthetic indigo. This form of colouring cloth is used by a variety of cultures to provide the dyer with the opportunity to create resist patterns that exploit shades of indigo blue.
Over the course of the workshop Sam will introduce you to several shibori methods including Kanoko, Itajime, Arashi as well as stitched shibori techniques. You will work mainly on cotton and silk fabrics, but you can also bring some small amounts of your own fabrics which we may get time to test out. Your resulting fabrics could be used in larger works or kept as samples to remind you of how to repeat the patterning techniques at home.
There will be the opportunity to create your own indigo dyed scarf on day three (scarf to be purchased in addition to workshop and materials fees) or you can continue to develop your resist technique work.
The workshop will include some hand stitching so please be prepared to spend time during the workshop and in the evenings stitching.
