Poetry of decay - a mixed media workshop with Christine Chester

How often do you take photographs of peeling paint, lichen, rusting metal, weathered rock surfaces and neglected buildings?

But then what?

In this workshop you will explore different techniques to interpret those beautiful marks on paper and in textiles.

This three day mixed media course with artist Christine Chester is an updated version of her original workshop and  will introduce you to some materials and processes that will help you to create rich and textured surfaces based on the inspiration found in your own photographs.

Working first on paper and then on fabric you will experiment with a variety of media including paints, inks, dyes, oil pastel, puff binder, bronzing and rusting powders and techniques such as  flour paste resist, space dyeing, gel transfer, Bondaweb, and  acrylic breakdown.
You will be encouraged to use your own mark making tools creating repetitive marks whilst producing a series of small paper based studies enabling you to layer experiments quickly, creating an understanding of your materials that you can then take on to work on more considered pieces on fabric and adding more texture with machine and hand stitch.
Towards the end of the course there will be an emphasis on composition and combining photos, card and fabric pieces to create small book forms that will provide a record of your experiments.
