Natural Dyeing - Caroline Bell

Explore  capturing natural colours on cloth with textile artist Caroline Bell

Picture
Caroline’s work focuses on sustainability, often using locally sourced, second-hand and upcycled fabrics.  She is inspired by the natural world, and where possible uses natural dyes, mordants and mark making materials.  Caroline studied Stitched Textiles at Eastleigh College and is a licentiate member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
In this workshop students will learn the basics of natural dyeing using natural dye extracts, preparation of fabrics, the correct use of mordants and methods of modifying those colours to achieve a whole rainbow of samples thus debunking the myth that natural dyes produce only muddy or insipid results which do not last!

You will be encouraged to start a dye book to record your results which will in turn give you a reference which you can use and add to after the workshop.

On the first day, using only three different dyes - indigo, weld and Brazilwood, you will dye and over-dye to create a whole spectrum of colour.  You will learn about the different mordants, how to prepare a fructose indigo vat and prepare and use dye extracts.

On the second day you will use a selection of other dye extracts and work in a similar way as on day one.  There will also be the opportunity to work with larger pieces of fabric as well as incorporate simple resist techniques.

In this workshop you will be using cotton fabric however Caroline will give you lots of information on how to work with other fibres.

This workshop is suitable for the complete novice and for anyone who may have been experimenting at home but would like to know more.
Scrumptious biscuits with your morning coffee, a light seasonal lunch and a 'naughty, but nice' cake with a pot of afternoon tea.  All this and a day being creative in the company of like minded people, what's not to like?
