Recently, I've been wondering about the mentoring sessions we offer with Matthew Harris and Claire Benn. More specifically, I was wondering whether our readers and students were wondering about them… What does a mentoring session entail? Is it for me? Am I ready to reflect on my work (and what does that even mean) … in short, maybe, am I good enough?

These workshops are not about learning new techniques, but working on what you already do, with intention, to develop your own work. They provide a supportive environment to help you build your creative practice with guidance and expertise from an experienced mentor. With a small group of no more than ten students, there will be ample individual time with the Claire or Matthew.

The tutor will work with you to help you clarify and understand your goals, providing advice and guidance on techniques or process to achieve your results. To get the most out of your workshop, you will definitely benefit from planning work beforehand, thinking about your purpose, personal imagery or marks, tools and processes you use. Throughout the week you will be working on you own practice - the tutor will meet you where you are and help push you further.
One-to-one and group discussions and dialogue will help you respond to your work as it evolves, developing your personal language and creating a narrative. These may include sessions on composition, quiet reflection or questionnaires, as well as making (of course!). You will begin to develop critical awareness and a deeper understanding of your work and how best to progress it.
