Simon Sonsino - Exploring abstract letterforms
A calligraphy workshop for non-calligraphers: challenging the perceptions of calligraphy
You may have come across Simon Sonsino at Art in Action where he is a regular demonstrator. He is a British calligrapher and textual artist who specialises in abstract expressionist art using calligraphy and all aspects of letterform.
We are really excited to be able to offer this workshop with Simon (not only because we want to do it too!). The textural qualities and sense of freedom from the conventions of calligraphy in his work speak to us and relate to our own textile work, where words and text are there for texture and interest but not necessarily meant to be read.
In this workshop we explore abstract calligraphy with expressive form and will work through a set of exercises creating marks with different writing tools and objects.
You don’t need any calligraphic experience as this isn’t a workshop that relies on straight lines, neat handwriting or legibility. All you need to bring is a piece of prose, a song lyric or quote that means something to you and we will work at creating a piece of art that evokes the mood of that text.
Date: Thursday 29th & Friday 30th September 2016
9.30am - 3.30pm
Sorry, but this workshop is now full.
However there are still a few places left on the Making Marks workshop with Clive Barnett or perhaps you might like to try one of our Pick'n'mix days?
There will be home made biscuits with morning coffee, a light seasonal lunch and an enticing cake with a pot of afternoon tea. So why not treat yourself and spend a day being creative in the company of friends this autumn?
